Our Work: Helping Orphans
The Ethiopian government gave us 8 acres of land to start the orphanage. American kids gave their Bat-Mitzvah gifts, birthday gifts, fundraised by selling baked goods in their schools, saved their pocket money and donated it for orphans in Africa. Their parents, moved by the generosity of their kids, also contributed funds graciously which enabled us to start the orphanage.
The dormitory of 3 floors will be home to 75 orphans. We have water and a generator installed. The only thing remaining is the electrical connection. The necessary poles and wires have been connected, but now we just need the city to turn it on! We're so close!
A second orphanage for HIV positive children
Hope Community Services has requested additional 10 acres of land to build a separate orphanage for HIV positive orphans. We intended to have the healthy kids and the HIV positive to be cared for in the same compound but the ministry of social affairs advised that we should have separate compounds.
The HIV positive are the most disadvantaged and doubly victimized. They have no chance of being adopted. Local adoption is a rarity since even relatives are shunning them for fear of the virus transmitted to their kids or themselves. Besides, the costly nutritional and medical needs of such kids also prohibits local people from opening their homes. Hope Community Services will provide the love and care to such orphans who through no fault of their own found themselves orphaned and infected with the deadly disease.
